In May of 2003 Robert Connor, former director of the Oakwood College Master Guide Drum Corp as well as director of the West End Flawless Pathfinder Drum Corps and Rodney Lake, director of the Belvedere Vanguard Pathfinder Club Drum Corps and met for the first time and discussed their individual experiences with their Drum Corps. With the BAYDA (Black Adventist Youth Directors Association) camporee and Drum Corps competition only three months away and no Corps to represent the Southern Union it was decided to pool resources and talent and to form a Drum Corps that could be representative of this region.
Needing a formal host organization to sponsor the Corps, the coordinators for the North Georgia East and West District consented to help. On June 1, 2003, tryouts were held and despite the limited campaign over 80 youth auditioned. From these auditions 50 youth were selected representing two conferences, 7 churches and 3 denominations For the next 2 months the drum corps practiced weekly, raised funds and participated in team building activities to strengthen and unify our diverse backgrounds.
After winning first place in both the teen and junior categories at the BAYDA camporee there was a public outcry to not disband C.R.E.A.M. Among the many inquires from other Pathfinder club members on how they too could join C.R.E.A.M., there were also request from Directors for help in starting their own Drum Corps Seeing how God blessed us despite the odds and realizing the potential for a powerful and unique ministry that could reach a variety of people, denominations and backgrounds it was decided to keep C.R.E.A.M intact and that study would be given as to how we could best benefit and reach our vast constituent base.
Since then, because of the relationship formed with the members of the corps needs have been recognized for educational and recreational youth programs that are not being met by local youth and community centers or government agencies. An initial core set of programs and classes have been started to address these gaps for our members as well as non-members. As a result the Atlanta Youth Coalition Inc was born to encompass and house the full spectrum of our mission and objectives.
Through the years the C.R.E.A.M. Drum Corps has evolved in response to the needs of its members, area high schools and HBCU's. After the 2008 season the name was changed to C.R.E.A.M. Percussion to better represent our growth plans of adding pit percussion to our existing battery as well as expansion to percussion ensembles, steel pan bands and music classes. Our relationships with educational institutions have grown and our programs have been modified to meet their needs. C.R.E.A.M. exist as a supplement to the music programs in school and not as competition to it. One of our direct goals is for every member of C.R.E.A.M. to obtain their high school diploma and then go on to College, preferably with a full music scholarship.
C.R.E.A.M. now works directly with College band directors and percussion instructions using its vast network and growing reputation to get their members noticed through it's spring break college tour and clinics featuring world renown clinicians from WGI, DCI, the percussion industries educational representatives and Colleges
